“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” (Edmund Burke).
Darkness, in and of itself, is nothing but the absence of light, and the only way to eliminate darkness is to introduce light. In the same way, evil is nothing but the absence of good. Therefore, the only way to truly be rid of evil is to replace it with good.
Consider Jesus’ parable in Matthew 12:43-45b: “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does no find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean, and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”
If the person had filled the space left by the impure spirit with the Spirit of God, when the impure spirit returned, there would have been no room for him. The final condition of that person would have been changed for the better.
We can keep trying with all our might to drive evil from our sinful world using our own methods, but it won’t say gone for long – if, indeed, it leaves at all. We need to stop waging war as the world does, with worldly weapons. We have weapons that have the divine power to demolish the strongholds of evil, and it is about time we started using them. We need to change our perspective and begin fighting the darkness not with apathy, not with tolerance, but with light.
